D3 608 Formerly plinthed at Stawell |
D3 608 stored at the Ballarat East Loco Depot. 29 March 2005.
This locomotive was constructed by the Victorian Railways Newport Workshops in 1915 and originally numbered DD 895, becoming one of the 261 members of the Victorian Railways DD-class. It was superheated and modified to D2 configuration in 1929, becoming D2 780, and was later further rebuilt with the larger D3 boiler in 1946, becoming D3 608. (For more information about the Victorian Railways DD-class locomotives, refer to the entry for D2 604.) D3 608 was sold by the Victorian Railways in approximately 1963 and plinthed in a Stawell park, where it remained until obtained by Steamrail Victoria in the mid-1980's. It was transferred to Ballarat for storage around this time and apparently stripped of corroded metal including the boiler clothing and tender tank. In more recent years D3 608 has been stored at the Ballarat East Locomotive Depot. |
