V 9 V 0-4-4 Beyer Peacock 1597 of 1877 Plinthed Naracoorte V9 was the first of four Beyer-Peacock & Co. built V-class locomotives which were imported in 1877 to operate the Kingston-Naracoorte line in South Australia.  These locomotives proved unsuited for line work, but were successful as shunters and a further four were built locally by James Martin & Co in 1893. V9 was the last of the class in SAR service when retired in 1955, and was plinthed in a Naracoorte park in that year.  (Ref. 17, pp.113)  (Wx18 was also plinthed alongside V9 at one stage.) Today V9 remains plinthed at Naracoorte, and is now displayed under a shelter that provides good protection against the elements, but makes photography very hard. V9 is the oldest preserved South Australian steam locomotive. (1) The V-class are quite similar to the Forney 0-4-4T locomotives which were once common on the elevated city railways of the USA, and may be an English version of this general design. (1)   This photo is dated 21 July 2001 and shows V9 plinthed at Naracoorte.

Y 82 Y 2-6-0 Beyer Peacock 2909 of 1888 Plinthed Peterborough Y82 had been plinthed for many years in a Peterborough playground, as shown in this photo of 26 September 1998. ASG - ASG 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 Various - - The Australian Standard Garratt (ASG) was proposed and designed by the Commonwealth Land Transport Board in 1942 in response to the urgent need for powerful locomotives for the 3' 6" gauge railways of Australia during WW2.  The design team was supervised by the WAGR Chief Mechanical Engineer (ref (5) pp 121) and the ASG bears some similarity to the WAGR S-class including the distinctive boiler cowling. (1)  The ASG was not very successful and required considerable remediation. (60)  6 ASG locomotives worked for a short period for the SAR as a stop-gap for the coming 400-class. (ref 17; pp136)  While none are preserved in SA, sister loco G33 survives in Victoria and is listed under the Victorian Industrial Locomotives section.

NM 25 NM 4-8-0 Thompson Foundry 51 of 1925 Operational Pichi Richi Railway, Quorn The Commonwealth Railways NM class was the same design as Queensland Railways C17 class, following the CR design philosophy of copying designs proven in Australia.  Following withdrawal, NM25 was used as a stationary boiler at Port Augusta until 1975.  She was then housed in a Port Augusta museum until moved to the Pichi Pichi Railway in the 1980's.  NM25 has since been restored to operation via funding from a Federal Government grant, and moved under its own power on 11 April 2003, for the first time in nearly 38 years.  This restoration included an entire new frame, as the original was warped.  This photo shows NM25 in storage within the PRR workshops in June 2000, prior to the commencement of restoration.  The PRR website includes a full description of NM25's overhaul.
