This
locomotive is one of 155 ‘War Office’ class 4-6-0T engines constructed by
Hunslet for the British Army for use by the War Department Light Railways
supplying the front-line trenches during World War 1. It was No.328 in War
Department service. These locomotives became surplus at the end of
hostilities, with 15 War Office Hunslets subsequently sold for use in the
Australian sugar-cane industry. For further information about the War Office
Hunslet locomotives, refer to sister War
Department No.306. Two War
Office Hunslets went to Cattle Creek Mill at Finch Hatton near Mackay, with
this preserved loco becoming No.2 on the mill roster. During its working
years at Cattle Creek, it received several modifications (in common with
other War Office Hunslets) including an extended smokebox. No.2 was withdrawn
from cane haulage duties in 1963 and stored before being donated to the
Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society (ANGRMS). After a period of
storage in Brisbane it arrived at ANGRMS site in Woodford in 1983, where it
remains in open storage in company with various other locos. The
Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society website
provides additional technical details for Cattle Creek Mill No.2. Update
July 2025: A social media post by Mark Dorman in the Facebook Group
‘Light Railways of Australia’ on 28 June 2025 provided the welcome news and
photos showing that the static restoration of Cattle Creek Mill No.2 was now
underway at ANGRMS: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1521663494557395/user/100005744465804/ |
