NF 6

Destroyed during WW2 air raid

(Photo required)

NF 6 was originally South Australian Railways locomotive W 54.  It was built by Beyer Peacock & Co, Manchester (Builder's Number 1721 of 1877) to the successful Beyer Peacock & Co "W-class" 2-6-0 design.

W 54 was one of a number of South Australian Railways locomotives transferred to Commonwealth Railways ownership for use on the North Australia Railway.  This line ran south from Darwin and saw heavy military traffic during World War 2.

NF 6 was shunting the Darwin Jetty on 19 February 1942 when caught during a Japanese air raid and blown into the harbour. Searches have failed to locate the remains of this locomotive, so perhaps it was literally 'blown to bits'.

While not a preserved locomotive, I have included this entry for NF 6 due to the unusual nature of its demise.
